About Kekova

It is an elongated island, 7.4 km long and approximately 500 m wide, extending parallel to Kaleköy (Simena) and Üçağız (Teimiusa) villages, and this island is also known as the Kekova Region, giving its name to the entire region. Its highest peak is 188 m, and the deepest part of the sea, which looks like a channel between it and the mainland, is 105 m.

The name Kekova has been used frequently in the fields of tourism and conservation due to its currency in recent years. In fact, boat tours in this area have started to be called "Kekova tour" and more importantly, the archaeological and natural protection areas in and around the island have been named "Kekova Protected Area".

Kekova and its surroundings, which have the cleanest sea not only of Antalya but also of the entire Mediterranean region, owes this cleanliness to the fact that it is under protection. The fact that it gained great appreciation from foreign visitors in this regard has been a source of pride for the Republic of Turkey in international protectionism.

Kekova Island has never had the characteristics of a city like the two small ports opposite it, but rather it protects the two cities against the Mediterranean like a curtain; It was used as a shelter for sailors, a shipbuilding and repair base.

The ruins on the northwest coast of the island, which is called the "Sunken City" today, date back to at least BC. It is the most colorful corner of Kekova, which has been used as a commercial and military base since the 5th century.

Tersane Bay, on the other hand, is both a swimming place and the area with the most intense archaeological remains with the basilica apse of the Byzantine Period. Near the corner known as the sunken city, there are usually settlement remains carved into the mainland and foundations in the water.

The fact that only the structures in this corner were submerged is most likely explained by the fact that the island was tilted from this corner to the mainland as a result of the earthquake.
